MasterClass with Dr. D. Ivan Young, MCC

Coaching the Emotional Brain: How Neuroscience Informs Empathy, Presence, and Change

In today’s emotionally charged world, many clients struggle to self-regulate, connect authentically, and sustain meaningful change. This masterclass takes coaches beneath the surface — into the neural and emotional architecture that drives human behavior — revealing how the latest neuroscience translates directly into more effective, presence-based coaching.

Dr. D. Ivan Young, MCC, an internationally recognized Behavioral Neuroscience Expert, demonstrates how the interplay between the limbic system, prefrontal cortex, and mirror neurons influences empathy, decision-making, and self-awareness in coaching sessions. Through a blend of live demonstration, discussion, and neuroscience-backed frameworks, participants will learn how to:
  • Recognize when a client’s brain is in survival mode versus learning mode, and how to restore psychological safety.

  • Apply neuro-empathic presence — the intersection of neuroscience, empathy, and the ICF Core Competencies — to deepen client awareness and insight.

  • Leverage neuroplasticity to help clients break reactive emotional cycles and create sustainable behavioral shifts.

The session includes a 15-minute live coaching demonstration with a volunteer participant, followed by guided reflection and discussion on the practical application of brain-based coaching methods.

Participants will leave with clear, evidence-based tools for coaching emotional intelligence, strengthening client resilience, and evoking insight that endures long after the session ends.

Earn 1.5 Core Competency CCEU

ICF Core Competencies Addressed
:
  • Cultivates Trust and Safety (Competency 4)
Participants will learn to identify neurobiological signals of threat and calm, and use evidence-based techniques to foster psychological safety and authentic connection.

  • Maintains Presence (Competency 5)
Through understanding the brain’s attentional networks, coaches will enhance their ability to remain grounded and attuned, even in emotionally charged conversations.

  • Listens Actively (Competency 6)
The neuroscience of mirror neurons and empathic attunement will be explored as a means to improve listening beyond words — tuning into emotional cues and subconscious patterns.

  • Evokes Awareness (Competency 7)
Participants will use neuroscience-informed questioning and reframing to help clients integrate insight, emotion, and action in a way that supports long-term behavioral change.

  • Facilitates Client Growth (Competency 8)
By aligning coaching strategies with how the brain forms and sustains new neural pathways, coaches will strengthen the client’s capacity for self-directed learning and personal mastery.
