The Hidden Dimension of Coaching: Cultivating Sensibilities

Competencies are the foundation of professional coaching, providing the observable skills and behaviors that ensure quality and consistency. Yet, many coaches recognize that competencies alone do not fully explain the depth and transformative power of coaching.

This session introduces a missing dimension: sensibilities.
Sensibilities are the human openings that shape presence, perception, and resonance with what emerges in the coaching conversation. While competencies organize what we do, sensibilities organize how we are. They allow us to notice the unspoken, to hold silence, to perceive fragility, and to respond from care rather than control.

Participants will:

• Explore the distinction between competencies and sensibilities.

• Discover how sensibilities such as time, trust, and resilience expand the impact of ICF Core Competencies.

• Engage in reflective practices to experience sensibilities in action.

By the end, you will leave with fresh distinctions, practical tools, and an inspiring challenge: What sensibility will you cultivate in your coaching tomorrow?

Together, we will:

• Distinguish competencies (the explicit grammar of coaching) from sensibilities (the music beneath the words).

• Explore key sensibilities — such as time, trust, and resilience — and how they amplify ICF Core Competencies.

• Experience short reflective practices to sense how cultivating sensibilities can expand your coaching impact.

• Consider how sensibilities may help us break free from our “paradigm boxes” and open new ways of leading and coaching in a complex world.

About the Speaker: Elena Espinal, MCC

Elena Espinal has over thirty years of experience in leadership development, executive coaching, future design, and team building. She is the founder of the first School of Coaching recognized by the Secretary of Education in Argentina, the Master’s Program in Coaching at the University of London (Mexico), and Team Power, a company dedicated to executive and organizational coaching.

She has worked across cultures in more than 30 countries on every continent, partnering with Fortune 500 companies, governments, and NGOs. A strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, Elena co-founded Coaching con Visión, an organization that has trained and supported more than 60 blind coaches, creating professional opportunities for them worldwide.

Elena holds a Doctorate in Dentistry (PhD), a Master’s in Pathology, and a Licentiate in Psychology, with extensive expertise in Ontological Coaching, Philosophy, Systemic Coaching, and Team Performance.

A recognized global thought leader, Elena has been a keynote speaker at coaching conferences on five continents, including ICF global and regional events (Washington, Colombia, Mexico, Bangkok, Malaysia, India, among others). She has also been invited as a speaker by several Fortune 500 companies and international chambers of commerce.

She was honored by the Argentine Association of Coaching (AAPC) as Master Coach and Honorary Member, alongside pioneers Julio Olalla, Fernando Flores, and Jim Selman.

Elena is also an experienced TED speaker and coach. She delivered her own TEDx talk in Mexico (2012) and was in charge of coaching all TEDxDF speakers for two years.
