What Are You Listening For? Exploring Competencies #6 and #7

The role of a coach is to be a thinking partner, not a problem solver. We will explore what this means in relation to competencies #6 Listens Actively and #7 Evokes Awareness. What does it mean to “listen into” the client’s story, to coach vertically instead of horizontally, and to use courage to reflect key concepts even if the client might feel uncomfortable? After a brief presentation on listening to identify the important elements in the frames of a client’s story, Marcia will do a coaching demonstration and then lead a discussion on the power of coaching slowly to activate creative processes in the brain.

Learning Objectives tied to Core Competencies:

  • Embrace the power of being a thinking partner instead of a problem solver.
  • Expand your understanding of the intentions and application of competencies #6 Listens Actively and #7 Evokes Awareness
