Welcome Message From Our President, Valeska Martins |
August arrives with the golden promise of new beginnings! As summer's restorative embrace begins to transition into autumn's purposeful energy, I find myself filled with profound gratitude for the journey of renewal we've all experienced and tremendous excitement for the transformative season ahead.
The summer months have gifted us precious time to recharge our spirits, rethink our approaches, and reconnect with the vision we embraced at the year's beginning. It's been a season of celebration—honoring the remarkable achievements we've accomplished together—and equally important, a time of reimagining and designing fresh possibilities for the semester ahead.
|

|
As we reflect on our first half of 2025, what extraordinary milestones we've reached! From our groundbreaking presence at The Business Show Miami to the innovative expansion of International Coaching Week, from the successful conclusion of our WeEvolution Project to the meaningful community partnerships we've forged. Each achievement has not only strengthened our foundation but proven our capacity to pioneer new pathways in coaching excellence.
Now, as we step into the second semester of 2025, I'm thrilled to share that ICFSFL is taking bold, deliberate steps into an era of enhanced connection and expanded impact. We're deepening our commitment to in-person events, recognizing the irreplaceable power of face-to-face connection in our coaching community. |
Our successful pilot projects—including the innovative design and methodology we developed for United Way Miami—are now proven models ready for broader implementation across our region.
The months ahead promise abundant opportunities for your professional growth. Our Masterclasses will offer even more pathways to earn CCEUs, culminating in our highly anticipated Fall Summit. We're intensifying our focus on creating practical resources for developing the business side of your coaching practice—because we believe every coach deserves a thriving practice.
Behind the scenes, our dedicated team of volunteers has been tirelessly crafting new initiatives that will benefit not only our South Florida members but also extend our impact to the Caribbean Islands within our chapter. These visionary volunteers are designing programs that honor our commitment to excellence while embracing innovation and inclusivity.
August represents more than a return from vacation—it's a homecoming to purpose, to connection, and to the collaborative spirit that makes our chapter extraordinary. This is your invitation to become an active architect of our chapter's future. We welcome your fresh ideas, your unique perspectives, and your willingness to contribute as a volunteer. Whether you're drawn to event planning, community outreach, professional development, or any aspect of our mission, there's a place for your gifts within our team.
The canvas of the second half of 2025 awaits our collective creativity. Together, we'll paint it with meaningful connections, transformative learning experiences, and the kind of professional growth that ripples far beyond our individual practices.
Welcome back to a season of purposeful action, meaningful connection, and unlimited possibility—because when passionate coaches unite with shared vision, magic happens!
Warmly,
Valeska Martins

| ICF South Florida Announcement |
Dear ICFSFL community,
I want to share an important leadership transition within our chapter. Joanna Davis will be stepping down from her role as VP of Programming, and we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for her exceptional dedication. |
 |
Under Joanna's guidance, we've seen our signature Masterclasses with Master Coaches to shine and a successful MCxMCC Spring Summit—both events that have become trademarks of our chapter's commitment to excellence. Joanna's genuine care for our organization and her unwavering focus on quality programming have strengthened our community immeasurably.
We're excited to announce that Claudia Flores, currently our VP of DEIB, will be transitioning into a combined role as VP of Programming and DEIB.
|
This strategic move reflects our commitment to ensuring that the values and principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging permeate all our programming offerings. Claudia brings exceptional leadership skills and deep organizational knowledge, having served as a dedicated volunteer on our Outreach Committee for two years before taking on her current VP role.
This transition represents an exciting opportunity for our chapter to honor all members while ensuring everyone feels they truly belong in our programming. Please join me in thanking Joanna for her outstanding contributions and welcoming Claudia to this expanded leadership role as we continue building an inclusive and excellent chapter together.
With confidence and gratitude,
Valeska Martins

Dear ICF South Florida members:
When I first joined the ICF South Florida Chapter, I was simply looking to connect with fellow coaches and continue growing in this incredible profession. What I found was so much more—a warm, vibrant community filled with passionate leaders and generous professionals. From the very first onboarding session, I felt welcomed and inspired to get involved, and I began volunteering right away.
I started my journey as a volunteer in the Outreach Committee as Admin Assistant to Valeska Martins and later had the privilege to serve as VP of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB). |
Each role has enriched my experience and deepened my appreciation for the meaningful work we do together. Today, I’m honored to embrace a new chapter as VP of Programming, a role I consider to be the heart of our Chapter.
As I take on this new responsibility, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Joanna Davis for her outstanding leadership, generous dedication, and the positive impact she’s had on our Chapter and the coaching community. Her contributions have left a lasting mark, and I’m grateful for the path she has helped pave.
In this new role, I am deeply committed to integrating the DEIB initiatives by curating programs that are engaging, relevant, and designed to support your continuous development as coaches and leaders. My intention is to offer opportunities for belonging, deep connection, learning, and transformation—creating experiences that reflect who we are and where we are headed as a coaching community.
I invite you to be part of this journey with me. Your ideas, energy, and participation are what make our Chapter thrive. Whether you’re a long-time member or just getting started, you belong here—and your presence matters.
With appreciation and enthusiasm,
Claudia Flores
VP of Programming

The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership
Jim Dethmer, Diana. Chapman & Kaley Warner Klemp |
The foundation for this book is the concept of Leading from Above the Line - this model is binary - either you are above the line leading consciously or below the line where you are not leading consciously. As a leader it is your responsibility to know where you are. When leading from below the line you can be closed, defensive and committed to being right and when you are above the line you are open, curious and committed to learning. As a conscious leader, being self-aware and owning the truth are both important.
The book goes on to define the term commitment as a statement of what is and from the author's perspective, you can know your commitments by your results, not by what you say your commitments are. The book makes many distinctions and talks about the many nuances that are useful in determining where a leader is leading from. From there the book talks about 4 ways of leading which further defines what is above the line and below the line.
There are 15 commitments and the first two are worth mastering as the foundation and can be game changers. Starting with taking full responsibility for the circumstances of your life, and your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing to growing in self-awareness and using curiosity as a path to rapid learning. Once the foundation is in place from commitments 1&2, next is commitment 3 - Emotional Intelligence and next there are groupings of commitments to practice to be a leader that is above the line and using Conscious Leadership consistently. Working with a partner or group to practice is beneficial to becoming the leader you choose to be.
I welcome your thoughts on the concepts presented in this book - bari@yourmeetingplace.com | Meet our Board of Director Member - Gaston Betoled |

Proud project or accomplishment -
I’m proud of every contribution every Outreach volunteer makes on behalf of ICF South Florida and whatever small or big accomplishments the make to propel our profession to the future. If I must pick one, I would go with the United Way Miami initiative featured in this issue of the newsletter. For starters, it’s very fulfilling to read/hear all the great feedback from our partner, United Way Miami, and from the participants of the first cochort. For this project, we decided to go for a comprehensive approach including instances of 1-on-1 coaching and group coaching and including some workshops as well, tapping only on some of the many ‘superpowers’ that our professional coaches have in their resources inventory. All combined, we produce a top-notch quality program that we ended up with a bang: a proper in-person celebration with the clients and the coaches!
Needless to say, that I’m super appreciative of our coaches and facilitators! You certainly made the difference and hopefully are an inspiration for other ICF South Florida members to take the leap and join the volunteer ranks in the near future! We’re always looking for new volunteers to expand our reach and impact! |
Fun fact!
Probably not much of a surprise by now, but I do love to sing, especially 80’s-90’s ballads and Broadway tunes! (which for me is great and for some might be fun). I’m also a birdwatcher and love bugs! (the entomologist in me), which could be surprising. |
Favorite word with the Team!
I would go with ‘Superpower’. I like superheroes comics and movies and how well their stories tell the journey of the heroes. So, I usually bring the question “What is your superpower?” to group sessions so we can start seeing each other under a different light (our strengths), and seeing the possible synergies and collective power, “if we work in tandem, there’s no fight we cannot win!” (quote from the lyrics of Defying Gravity from Wicked) |

As we just passed the midpoint of 2025, the ICF South Florida Outreach Committee is proud to celebrate an inspiring season of growth, impact, and collaboration. Guided by our shared mission to expand access to coaching and amplify its benefits across communities, we’ve delivered some meaningful initiatives—thanks to the dedication and heart of our incredible volunteers. |
Two Coaching for Social Impact Initiatives Completed
✅ WEvolution Power Coaching 2025
In partnership with María Gabriela Hoch and her WEvolution organization, we proudly completed another powerful edition of WEvolution Power Coaching. Over 30 ICF South Florida volunteer coaches supported women changemakers across Latin America, contributing countless hours of 1:1 coaching. On July 1st, participants and coaches gathered to celebrate this milestone, share testimonials, and recognize the transformative power of this experience. Our appreciation goest to Katya Talavera, Hayley Fretwell, Olena Fedorchenko, and all the volunteer coaches!
✅ United Way Miami Coaching Program
Our second major initiative partnered with United Way Miami to support local nonprofit professionals. Coaches helped participants explore their goals, build confidence, and experience coaching firsthand. The feedback has been incredibly positive, and we’re excited about the doors this opens for future collaboration. Thanks to Toni Clem, Valerie Freilich, Nurdes Gomez, Rosario Kaune, Rosario Lago, Kymberly O’Brien, Rhapsodi Pierre-Jacques, Shakti Radhakishun, George Rathman, Vimari Roman, and Celia Szelwach.

International Coaching Week & Our Outreach Series Launch
We kicked off our Outreach Program Series during International Coaching Week, introducing leaders, professionals, and community partners to what coaching can do in action. This included interactive workshops, coaching demonstrations, and facilitated conversations. We also proudly joined the ICF Coast to Coast Initiative, collaborating with other chapters across the U.S. to elevate the reach and relevance of coaching through aligned programming.
|
Community Representation at Key Events
We’ve taken our message directly into the community by representing ICFSFL at The Business Show and The Small Business Fair—two dynamic in-person events that gave us the opportunity to engage directly with small business owners, entrepreneurs, and local leaders interested in discovering how coaching can drive performance and ignite growth.
|
A Huge Thank You to Our Volunteers. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the passion, expertise, and commitment of our amazing volunteers. You’ve helped bring coaching to life and shown what’s possible when we lead with purpose and community.
|
What’s Next? Even More Impact. We’re just getting started. With more initiatives on the horizon, we’re excited to expand our partnerships and continue raising awareness about the transformative power of coaching for individuals, teams, and organizations.
|

AI, Music, and Non-Violent Communication: Building Bridges through Innovation and Empathy. In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, the need for human-centered communication has never been greater. On August 27th, ICF South Florida proudly joins forces with the AI Music Tech Tradeshow and Conference and The Quality Mind International (TQMI) to present a groundbreaking half-day event exploring how artificial intelligence, music, and non-violent communication (NVC) can come together to foster empathy, leadership, and innovation.
This transformative program will feature an engaging fireside chat titled “Practicing Non-Violent Communication in a Connected World”, facilitated by TQM and ICF coaches, including Jean Marie Altema and Valeska Martins, and moderated by Diana Figueroa. Attendees will experience a dynamic blend of dialogue, live music, and mindfulness practices designed to deepen emotional intelligence and communication skills in professional and creative settings.
The morning continues with a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Young Creators & Human-Centered AI: Speaking the Language of Connection”, featuring Pedro Santos Acosta (Miami-Dade College) and other innovative voices exploring how technology and music can build empathy and authentic connection in teams and communities.
As champions of transformational leadership and human development, ICF South Florida is honored to be a key partner in this initiative, bringing the power of coaching to a new intersection of technology, art, and emotional well-being. This collaboration reflects our chapter’s ongoing mission to inspire conscious leadership and elevate conversations that unite innovation with empathy.

Venture Boldly Forward: 4 Practices to Drive Courage and Expansion |
by Carrie Spaulding, PCC |
Last year, I had the pleasure of connecting with many of you through my keynote for the Luminous conference, where we explored how your relationship with yourself, others, and your environment shape your coaching, leadership, and life.
As a proud sponsor of ICF South Florida, I’m excited to continue supporting your growth with four bold practices to help you stretch into what’s next for you—whether that means expanding your coaching and leadership work, launching a personal project, or deepening your own internal growth.
These practices have empowered me both to continuously grow and reach my own goals, and to serve my coaching clients, group participants, and keynote audiences on a dramatically higher level.
No matter what stage of our personal and professional growth journey we’re in, each of us can use these keys to stretch into who we truly are, and to increase our level of contribution, reach, and impact.
The Practices
1. Practice making bold moves in small, everyday ways.
When you see someone making big bold moves, what you can’t see is that they’ve built the skills to do that by taking steps out of their comfort zone again and again. Courage is a muscle you can build!
What’s one tiny bold move you can make this week?
2. Start, rekindle, or deepen a creative practice.
A consistent creative practice helps you tap into intuition; boost self-awareness; and increase creativity, innovation, and authenticity. Plus, expanding joy and play in your life will enhance everything else you do!
How can you put play and creativity on the calendar this month?
3. Develop your spontaneous responsiveness skills.
Practicing the skills of improvisation will help you become more confident, courageous, and resilient. Adaptability, creative thinking, and embodied presence are game-changers!
Where would you like to expand your adaptability this year?
4. Find and engage with growth-oriented communities.
Connection is essential to wellbeing, growth, and sustainable change. Surrounding yourself with others who are asking big questions and making brave moves can make all the difference in catalyzing your own courageous growth!
What’s one way you can double down on your connection and community going forward?
The Invitation
Ready to take bold action? Here are two timely opportunities to put these practices into motion with my support:
1. Join me for Venture Boldly Week—a FREE 5-day online experience August 18 – 22 where we’ll dive into these practices. You’ll build courage, connect with a growth-oriented community, and get a little taste of the deep transformation we create in The Lab, my 8-week program. Register for the free week here: https://carriespaulding.com/vbw/
2. Want to go deeper? If you’re ready for immersive, transformational growth, join me in The Lab—an 8-week experiential journey designed to help you be who you are, do what you’re here for, and venture boldly forward in your work and life. The fall cohort runs September 8 – November 10. Don’t wait—this cohort is starting to fill up and there are only 12 spots available!Learn more about The Lab and register here: https://carriespaulding.com/lab/
Here’s to our next bold moves—and the connections that will support us along the way.
P.S. I’d love to hear how your wins unfold—let me know how these practices work for you!

The Six Coaches You Really Don’t Want to Be |
By Dr. Loubna Noureddin, Ed.D., MCC
|
Coaching is powerful. It can transform lives, careers—and yes, even boardrooms. But let’s be honest: not all coaching is created equal. In fact, some coaching styles should come with a warning label.
After two decades in leadership and coaching, I’ve met some incredible coaches—and a few walking cautionary tales. So, let’s have some fun (and maybe cringe a little) as we meet six coaches you definitely don’t want to become.
|
1. The Hyper-Achiever Coach
This coach ties their self-worth to their success. When I missed a goal, my dear coach Peter looked like I’d canceled Christmas. Instead of asking what kept me stuck, he doubled down on the guilt trips. Your role is coaching, not Dr. Fix it all. It’s about staying curious. Seeing beyond the obvious. Sometimes the real magic comes from holding space, not holding scorecards.
|
2. The Agenda Coach
Ah, Patty. She came to every session like she was prepping for a board meeting—with charts, checklists, and a laser pointer (probably). The only thing missing? Me. Coaching is not about the coach’s plan. It’s about my journey. My needs. Don’t decide the agreement, solicit the agreement from your client. If you’re leading the dance every time, you’re not coaching—you’re choreographing.
|
3. The People-Pleaser Coach
Been there, done that. I avoided the tough comment so many times as a new coach. I once tiptoed around a dominant CEO because I didn’t want to ruffle feathers. My mentor asked, “Are you here to serve, or to please?” That one hurt. But it changed me. A good coach tells the truth—even when it’s awkward, inconvenient, or makes the CEO squirm.
|
4. The Know-it-all Coach
We get it. You’ve read all the books. But if you’re filling every silence with your brilliance, you’re not coaching—you’re lecturing. Some of the most powerful moments in coaching come in the “pause”. Give your client the gift of your presence, not your podcast. It is hard to stay in the pause. Practice it. Set an alarm. Allow your client to reflect, think and connect at a deeper level.
|
5. The Sales Coach
I hired Pat, a wonderful coach I met at the Chamber of Commerce, who ended our 4th session by pitching anti-aging creams. I left feeling cheated—literally. If you’re turning coaching sessions into a shopping channel, please stop. Coaching is sacred. Don’t sell skincare during soul work.
|
6. The Overexcited Coach
Picture this: Your client’s having a vulnerable breakthrough, and you interrupt with, “YESSS! OMG, ME TOO!” Bless your enthusiasm, but calm down. Coaching isn’t about outshining your client’s moment. It’s about helping them own it. Be there for them, silence the talker. Be present and mirror their energy.
The Bottom Line: Be the coach you want hire. Hold space, not judgment. Be present, not perfect. Help them feel seen, accepted and a little bit of tension might be the perfect addition to the recipe.
And most importantly—trust your client. They have the answers. You just have to stop talking long enough to hear them.

| | | Celebrate Success of Past Events |
We are thrilled to share some incredibly exciting news! Last Wednesday, July 16th, we successfully completed a pioneering coaching program with United Way Miami.
This pilot program was specifically designed to demonstrate the profound power of coaching, supporting the development of a cohort of 10 dedicated members from the United Way Miami team. The program featured a dynamic blend of 1-on-1 coaching, engaging Group Coaching sessions, and insightful Workshops tailored to topics identified by the group. |
 |
And the feedback we received is amazing: |
"I loved this program, and I hope others from my team are able to experience this!"
"This program exceeded my expectations by providing both practical tools and deeper self-awareness."
"Great program, I wish it didn’t have an end date."
"The program was incredibly valuable and well-structured."
|
Our celebratory event on that same Wednesday was a wonderful success! We were able to gather everyone in the same room to recognize the participants' remarkable commitment and engagement throughout the program. We also want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Paola Hernandez and Liliana Amsdill from the United Way Miami People Operations team. Their active role as promoters and supporters was invaluable, and we're already working closely with them on exciting next steps for this partnership!
Finally, this initiative would not have been possible without the incredible contribution of our amazing volunteer coaches, trainers, and coordinators who dedicated their time and expertise to this pilot program. A massive thank you to each one of you for making this such a resounding success! |
